Tensile Testing up to 10kN

This tensile module (compression as option) for the SEM (and a limited selection of “Atomic Force Microscops”) fits on the sample stage just like an oversize specimen. The test objects should be 20 to 60 mm long, not thicker than 5 mm.

  • Load ranges: from 10N up to 5000 N (10kN option)
  • Specimen dimensions in mm (max. sizes): 60 x 10 x 5
  • Deformations speed range: 0.3 to 50 µm/sec.
  • Displacement: The module is equipped with a linear encoder displacement gauge. This gauge covers the total displacement range up to 45mm, with a resolution of
  • Electrical connection: 230/110 VAC.
  • Module dimensions in mm (w x h x l): 150 x 55 x 220.

Micro Tensile Testing

The instrument shown in this example is a sub-stage («module») for the SEM specimen stage, which will also work under the light microscope. It is suitable for mechanical load experiments, such as static or oscillating tensile tests with extremely small solid bodies. In most of all cases it is quite difficult to clamp fine wires, whiskers or capillaries that have grown on specimen preparation disks or metal surfaces in order to perform tensile or dynamic tests on them. These particles are usually so fine that the operator will no longer be able to handle them manually. To get access to such dimensions, a piezo-controlled gripper mechanism was combined with a crosstable mechanics of highest displacement resolution, and a load gauge that will do fractions of µN.

Fiber Tensile Module

The outer dimensions of the Fiber Tensile Module are 80 x 100 x 22 mm3, it is mounted to the SEM or light microscope specimen stage «like a large specimen». It allows in-situ observation of tensile testing experiments at extremely low forces, yet very high load resolution (down to 1×10-5 N). The tensile speed range is 0,1 to 20 µm/s. These features, coupled with maximum stiffness of this substage, allow very accurate measurements on fibers of down to 2.5 µm diameter, and several millimeters length.

Bending Module 200N

Bending Module for 3- and 4-Point-Bending Experiments, 200 N. This device is a member of a «family» of testing attachments which may all run from the same controller. This multi-purpose testing device allows viewing the specimen’s top and side. The specimen may stay inside the device without changing the applied load, when changing the viewing direction, or taking it to a different microscope.
  • Load ranges: from 0 … 0.2 up to 0 … 200N
  • Specimen dimensions (maximum sizes): 48 x 10 x 4 mm
  • Deformation speed range: 0.5 to 100 µm/sec.
  • Bending displacement range: 0 to 5 mm per experiment; the displacement gauge plunger can be zeroed or re-zeroed over almost a centimeter
  • Electrical connection: 220 or 110 V AC. A 15-pin plug at the chamber wall of the SEM is supplied with the set
  • Dimensions in mm (width/height/length): 40 x 40 x 180 mm

Bending Module 5kN (side view)

It is manufactured high-vacuum compatible, so except the AFM, you may also use it in the SEM. Changing from 3-point to 4-point bending is a matter of a few seconds, just exchanging the «anvil» on which the specimen rests in center. The specimens should be 35 to 50 mm long, no wider than 15 mm, and up to 8 mm thick.
  • Load Ranges: 200 N, 500 N, 1 000 N, 2 000 N, 5 000 N – others upon request
  • Specimen dimensions (maximum sizes): 50 mm x 10 mm x 4 mm
  • Deformation speed range: 0.2 to 150 µm/sec
  • Displacement range: 0 to 5 mm per experiment; the displacement gauge plunger can be zeroed or re-zeroed over more than a centimeter
  • Electrical connection: 220 or 110 V AC. A 15-pin plug at the chamber wall of the SEM can be supplied with the set
  • Dimensions in mm (width/length/height): 100 mm (170 mm with heavy duty motor) x 130 mm x 55 mm

This deformation device can be easily mounted to the specimen stage of the SEM, just like a large size sample. To switch from 3-point bending to four-point bending is a matter of a few seconds, just exchanging the «anvil» on which the specimen rests in center. The specimens should be 28 to 40 mm long, no wider than 15 mm wide, and up to 4 mm thick.

  • Load Ranges: 50N, 100 N, 200 N, 500 N, 1 000 N, 2 000 N and 5 000 N
  • Specimen dimensions (maximum sizes): 40 mm x 15 mm x 4 mm
  • Deformation speed range: 0.05 to 4 µm/sec, or 2 to 100 µm/sec
  • Displacement range: 0 to 5 mm per experiment; the displacement gauge plunger can be zeroed or re-zeroed
  • Electrical connection: 220 or 110 V AC. A 15-pin plug at the chamber wall of the SEM is supplied with the set
  • Dimensions in mm (width/length/height): 100 x 120 x 55 mm

Transfer Module

The «Transfer Module» is a special device for use with an SEM. It is made for the purpose of carrying delicate and sensitive specimens in a capsule from the SEM into a glove box or vice versa, so that these specimens will be protected from air or moisture at all times. This device will mount on the specimen stage just like a microscope sample. It takes just a few moments to install it in the SEM, or in the glove box.
